Ignorance is Bliss

This is another response to Mile’s post, “The Queen Isn’t the Only Crazy One“.

The Queen never does explain why she is killing her subjects. She acts like a spoiled child. Whenever something happens she doesn’t like, she just kills someone to get what she wants. She may not even realize that she should give a reason. She may simply think that everyone should blindly follow her orders.

I could compare this to Queen Marie Antoinette’s famous words: “Let them eat cake.” Just so everyone is clear, she did not actually say this, but for the sake of this post, let us pretend that she did…

Upon learning that the peasants of France were revolting, the Queen asked why. She was told that one of the reasons was that the peasants were upset because the price of bread was too high for them to buy, and they were starving. In response, she ignorantly said, “Let them eat cake.”

Queen Marie Antoinette obviously had no idea what was really happening in her country, and because she was spoiled, felt she needed to provide no reason, or fix, for the rising bread prices, just as the Queen of Hearts did not feel the need to provide reason for all of her beheadings.

But, you know, ignorance is bliss…

This is true. Ignorance gives us a way to see only what we feel like seeing in order to create a false yet happier reality. For many people, creating this reality for themselves is the only way they can avoid not completely breaking down. In the Queen’s case, she kills people not only because she is ignorant, but because she is obsessed with power. Really obsessed. As any ruler is, really. Somebody who is in a position of power willingly has some fear or losing their power, no matter how small that fear is. The Queen is insecure, wild, irrational and ignorant. All of these characteristics are what make her a perfect example of the crazy characters in this story.
