Funbus

November 20, 2009

Those are the some of the lyrics of “Funbus” by Buckethead (feat. Dirk Rogers and Keith Azami) that caught my eye.  Note: these are only some of the lyrics.

failure only happens from originality
music is art that we’re afraid to enjoy
like a child who’s outgrown his favorite toy
afraid to acknowledge what makes us feel good
afraid to leave the mold , if we only could
a group is always easier to follow
than finding something new to swallow
so give us the art that’s boring and plain
its easier to be different when its the same
fear something new till we’re told its ok
no time to explore no time to play
the craving for new is something to shun
thinking is bad it spoils the fun

The song is very strange, and I don’t think most people will like it, but the lyrics are very interesting.

Some of my favorites are “no time to explore no time to play, the craving for new is something to shun, thinking is bad it spoils the fun”. The first line “no time to explore, no time to play” could be applied to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in that everything is being given a meaning or an explanation, taking away some of the fun of the story, leaving “no time to play” with the story, and Alice seems to have “no time to explore, no time to play” in wonderland.

I like how the lyrics are saying how everyone seems to think that we have to keep doing the same boring thing. Any of the lines could really be applied to something in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I don’t even know what some of the lines could mean, but I think all of them could be applied to the story some how. What do you think?

I think the song works well for comparison with Alice.

I disagree with your idea about “no time to explore, no time to play”. Alice’s entire plot adventure is about her exploring and learning to deal and play nice with others. I think the “play[ing]” with the story is found in trying to search for explanations.

I have to agree with the line in the song “music is art that we’re afraid to enjoy”, although I do not think it applies to the story. Many, in fact the majority of people limit their tastes in music. Some prefer rap, others jazz, techno, pop, classical, you name it and somebody likes it. However, why not enjoy it all, why not expand the palate to include all of the above and more? I laugh when I listen to my iPod, because it will go from heavy bluegrass banjo to death metal to mozart all in ten minutes. Why can or should we not broaden our horizons and our hopes by hoping to understand eachother through our individual tastes?
