Risks: When Should They Be Taken?

November 19, 2009

I was thinking about the risks Alice took while she was in Wonderland, and whether or not she should have taken them. I got the idea to quote the definition of “risk” from

“exposure to the chance of injury or loss; a hazard or dangerous chance.”

Now, this would mean anything and everything is a risk. By walking down the street you are taking the risk of being hit by a car, and by staying in your house you are taking the risk that your roof could collapse upon itself.

But in reality, we usually do not constitute walking down the street or staying in your home a real risk. So,

At what point do we decide that a risk is negligible?

Look at Alice. She took a big risk by drinking the size-changing potion, for she could not have known what would actually happen.

So, another question…

How do you determine if a risk is worth taking if you do not know anything about the outcome, like Alice did not know anything about what the potion would do to her?

That’s a pretty good question, in my own opinion only. I wonder the same thing myself, because it is a person to person kind of thing. One might think it’s worth the risk, others might not. A friend of mine decided to make a decision that was rather risky to his life, but I know that I would never do anything like that. I suppose it depends on the person’s own biases. If someone in your family has died in a car accident, then you might think it a huge risk to drive a care, whereas, there are tons of people around the world who drive cars daily.

At that point in the story, even this early, she was at a point of desperation. There wasn’t much else she could do. The door was too small to crawl through and the Rabbit-hole was unfathomably too high to climb up. The bottle was really all she had. Alice did, though, check it for poison, but there was no real way to tell what it was. She did take a risk, but at times where there is no other option- do you finally take that leap?

Life is all about leaping whether it’s for faith, for love, or for a kick of excitement. Every minute and every second you’re risking something. We never know what will come next, there is no way for us to expect what’s booming on the train towards us. To live life fearing what’s ahead and living with minimal risks is a waste in my opinion. I envy children and how they live life knowing there are risks but only because their parents implant those in their minds. They can conquer anything, because they’re willing to jump and they don’t really mind where they are headed they just enjoy the potentially hazardous journey.
