Dreams Representing Reality
I was having a discussion with a classmate today when an interesting thought came into my head…
We were discussing the puppy scene, and were debating whether or not the puppy seemed out of place in Wonderland. It occurred to me that perhaps the reason the puppy seemed out of place in Wonderland (for it did not speak, or do anything that a puppy wouldn’t normally do) was because it was coming from the real world into Alice’s dream. I know that when I’m asleep, my dog will sometimes lick me or try to wake me up and he will appear in the dream I am having. Perhaps Alice had a dog is real life that was licking or nudging her while she was having this dream.
So, if the dog could come from the real world into Alice’s dream, why couldn’t anything else? Maybe the other animals represented her family and friends, or in some cases, her enemy. The Queen could have been a mean aunt that Alice did not like, or the cat a wise uncle. The same could be true for the situations presented to her.
